Gum Disease & Gingivitis Treatment

At Heritage Dental Center, we provide comprehensive gum disease and gingivitis treatment to help restore your oral health. Whether you're in the early stages of gingivitis or dealing with advanced periodontal disease, we offer robust treatment plans to address your oral health.

Routine Gum Disease Assessments

For: Early detection and prevention of gum disease.

What it involves: A thorough examination of your gums, teeth and supporting structures to identify signs of gingivitis or early-stage gum disease. Catching gum issues early allows for less invasive treatment and better outcomes.

Comprehensive Periodontal Exams

For: Patients with a higher risk of gum disease.

What it involves: A detailed examination, including the measurement of gum pocket depths and a visual check for signs of infection or tissue loss. This is recommended for patients with risk factors like smoking, diabetes or a family history of gum disease.

Advanced Periodontal Disease Treatment

For: Severe gum disease or periodontitis.

What it involves: Utilizing advanced treatment techniques such as scaling and root planing, laser therapy or surgical options to remove bacteria, reduce inflammation and restore gum health. These treatments help prevent tooth loss and improve overall oral health.

Personalized Gum Disease Care

For: Ongoing gum health maintenance.

What it involves: After treatment, we’ll work with you to develop a personalized plan, including regular cleanings and maintenance visits. We also provide guidance on home care to keep your gums healthy and prevent future issues.

Heritage Dental’s Advanced Periodontal Technology

The Cavitron

The Cavitron ultrasonic scaling device uses high-frequency sound waves and gentle vibrations to revolutionize deep cleaning, removing plaque, tartar, and calculus more efficiently than traditional methods. Its steady water flow and advanced technology provide faster, more comfortable treatments, especially in hard-to-reach areas, making it ideal for preventive care, stain removal, and periodontal disease treatment.

Soft Tissue Lasers

Our dental practice utilizes advanced soft tissue laser technology, providing precise, minimally-invasive treatments with significantly reduced pain, bleeding and recovery time. This highly concentrated light beam simultaneously seals nerve endings and blood vessels while treating soft tissues, creating less stress on the gums and minimizing infection risk. Our team's expertise with soft tissue lasers ensures both exceptional dental care and optimal patient comfort.

The 3 Stages of Periodontal Disease

Periodontal disease progresses in stages, starting with gingivitis, the earliest stage, which involves inflamed, tender and bleeding gums due to plaque buildup. If left untreated, it can advance to periodontitis, where plaque hardens into tartar, causing gum recession, deeper pockets and early bone loss. The final stage, advanced periodontitis, results in severe damage to the gums, bone and ligaments, leading to tooth loosening and significant bone loss. Early intervention is key to preventing further damage.

What to Expect During Your Gum Disease Evaluation

At Heritage Dental Center, we provide comprehensive evaluations to detect early signs of gum disease, including gingivitis and periodontal disease. During your gum disease assessment, you can expect the following:

  1. Evaluation of Gum Health: We’ll carefully examine your gums, looking for signs of gum disease such as redness, swelling, bleeding or pockets between your gums and teeth. We’ll also check for signs of bone loss around your teeth.
  2. Risk Factor Discussion: We’ll discuss your medical history, oral hygiene habits and lifestyle factors like smoking, diet or diabetes, which increase your risk for gum disease. We’ll also ask about any symptoms you may be experiencing, such as gum pain or persistent bad breath.
  3. Visual and Physical Examination: Our dentist will conduct a thorough visual inspection of your gums and teeth, checking for any areas of concern. This may include gently probing the gums to measure pocket depths and evaluate gum recession.
  4. Advanced Diagnostic Tools: If necessary, we may use advanced tools like digital X-rays to check for bone loss or assess the health of the underlying structures supporting your teeth.
  5. Review and Next Steps: After your exam, we’ll review the findings with you, recommend treatment options if needed, and discuss a personalized care plan to prevent further gum disease progression. If further tests or treatments are required, we’ll guide you through the next steps in your care plan.

Gum Disease & Gingivitis Treatment FAQs

How Often Should I Get a Gum Disease Checkup?

Regular gum disease evaluations are typically recommended every 6 months as part of your routine dental checkup. However, if you're at higher risk—such as those with a history of gum disease, smoking habits or diabetes—you may need more frequent visits for monitoring.

Does Dental Insurance Cover the Cost of Gum Disease Treatment?

Many dental insurance plans cover the cost of gum disease treatments, including scaling and root planing, as part of preventive or therapeutic care. However, coverage can vary, so it's best to check with your insurance provider to understand the specifics of your plan.

What Does a Gum Disease Treatment Involve?

Gum disease treatment typically begins with a thorough cleaning to remove plaque and tartar from above and below the gum line. If the disease is more advanced, treatments like scaling and root planing may be used to smooth the roots and prevent further gum recession or tooth loss.

Are There Any Side Effects to Gum Disease Treatment?

Most gum disease treatments are safe and effective, though you may experience some tenderness or mild discomfort after the procedure. Side effects are typically temporary and can be managed with proper post-treatment care.

Can Gum Disease Be Prevented?

While gum disease can’t always be completely prevented, it can often be managed or halted with proper oral hygiene, regular dental cleanings and lifestyle changes. Early intervention is key to preventing progression to more severe stages like periodontitis.

How Long Will Gum Disease Treatment Take?

The length of your gum disease treatment will depend on the severity of your condition. A basic cleaning may take about 30-60 minutes, while more intensive treatments like scaling and root planing can require multiple sessions, often spaced a few weeks apart.
